How much does Renewable Natural Gas cost?

The cost of the voluntary Renewable Natural Gas1 (RNG) program depends on the blend you choose. You can designate five, 10, 25, 50 or 100 per cent of your gas use as RNG.

As of January 1, 2025, the average residential gas customer will see an overall increase to their bill of around $14.25 per month based on a monthly consumption of about 7.5 gigajoules (GJ). Changes to individual bills will vary based on use. This marks the first increase since 2022, as overall gas rates fell in both 2023 and 2024 for most customers. This change will help FortisBC to make the necessary system improvements and long-term investments so that customers have the energy they need, when they need it.

Choose your RNG blend

As of January 1, 2025, all FortisBC gas customers have two per cent of their gas use designated as RNG, known as designated RNG blend. We continue to offer the voluntary RNG program so customers can choose to designate up to 100 per cent of the gas they use as RNG, inclusive of the two per cent blend.

The graph below shows the cost of a designated 100 per cent RNG blend for an average residential customer. If you choose a five, 10, 25 or 50 per cent blend, the cost will be lower.

Based on rates as of January 2025. Basic charges excluded. Natural gas price and 100 per cent RNG price is inclusive of the two per cent designated RNG blend.

Note: Gas use is typically measured in gigajoules (GJ). In order to compare the cost of natural gas and RNG with electricity, which is measured in kilowatt hours (kWh), we did a conversion from GJ to kWh so we can compare the cost of all four in the same terms.

Average RNG cost

Based on rates as of January 2025 and an average annual usage of 90 GJ per year. Voluntary RNG blends are inclusive of the two per cent designated RNG blend e.g. if a customer designates a five per cent blend, three per cent will be voluntary and two per cent is the automatic designation.

As of January 1, 2025, customers subscribed in the voluntary RNG program will pay a rate of $13.22 per GJ for the cost of biomethane on their gas bill. Below we’ve calculated the additional cost for the different blends of RNG for the average customer.2

Renewable Natural Gas (also called RNG or biomethane) is produced in a different manner than conventional natural gas. It is derived from biogas, which is produced from decomposing organic waste from landfills, agricultural waste and wastewater from treatment facilities. The biogas is captured and cleaned to create RNG. When RNG is added to North America’s natural gas system, it mixes with conventional natural gas. This means we’re unable to direct RNG to a specific customer. But the more RNG is added to the gas system, the less conventional natural gas is needed, thereby reducing the use of fossil fuels and overall greenhouse gas emissions.
Renewable Natural Gas rate and conventional natural gas rate is subject to quarterly rate adjustments. The B.C. carbon tax on natural gas, which is set by the provincial government and collected by FortisBC on their behalf, is also subject to periodic adjustments.
